We all know that it is extremely important for any business to make use of keywords in order to increase traffic and conversions on our website. However, when it comes to tracking those keywords and combining them in such a way that they give us real results, it’s not something very simple.

If your business is small and just starting out let me tell you that the fastest way to get traffic is to make good use of long tail keywords. Long tail what? You're probably thinking right now. Don't panic, we haven't gone crazy. In the SEO world there are different ways to rank keywords. Long tail keywords are one way to rank them and they are key to get results. That's why today, we're going to present you some examples and tips so you can use them in your own business. Let's get started!

What are long tail keywords?

Long tail keywords are not searched as much as other more popular keywords, precisely because they are composed of two or three words and are more specific.

However, it's not the length of the keyword that defines if it's a long tail keyword or not, but rather the ease with which they rank.

Let's look at an example. If you have a new site where you offer English classes, it can be difficult to position the site in search engines using generic and very popular words like "English".

On the other hand, if you target less searched terms that are related to your field, it's easier to stand out. For example, "how to learn English from home".

It's important to understand that long tail keywords separately are not searched for much, but together they make up the majority of search traffic and that is why it is key to learn how to track them.

Why are long tail keywords important for your online business?

As we've seen, long tail keywords are essential to help your site stand out on the Internet. Let's take a look at some of their advantages:

Your site will rank easier with the use of long tail keywords

As we've said, long tail keywords are fundamental to help your site rank in search engines. There is a lot of competition for the main keywords, but that is not the case with long tail keywords and that’s why they become so relevant.

A more segmented audience will reach your website

Secondly, being more specific, long tail keywords tend to attract a much more segmented audience to our site and therefore, we have more chances to convert them into customers or leads.

Advertising is less expensive

The main keywords, being more competitive, are also more expensive. Their cost per click is higher than that of long tail keywords. That is why if we put together a good long tail keyword strategy, we will probably get a better return on our advertising investment.

How to find the right long tail keywords?

If you got this far you are probably wondering: how do I find the right keywords? Well, there is no magic formula to find them and the truth is that at first you have to be very patient to find the keywords that give you results.

However, there are some guidelines you can follow that will surely help you find the right long tail keywords.

Start by thinking about your business: What is your value proposition? What makes your product or service necessary or desirable? What are the people who need your products or services looking for? Your keywords should primarily highlight what your business excels at.

For example, if we go back to the case of English classes. A long tail keyword might be: English classes at home. But do you think that keyword is really effective? Perhaps, you offer English classes at home only in Barcelona. Then, you could be even more specific by choosing as keywords "English classes at home in Barcelona" Can you see the difference?
